History of WineMaking in Lake Country

Established back in 1976 was Lake Country’s first and only winery, Gray Monk Winery founded by Trudy and George Heiss. They were the first to introduce Pinot Gris vines into the Okanagan, sourced from the Alsace of the France region. This began a movement, and started the mark of wine growing in both Lake Country and the Okanagan.

Now, Lake Country is home to 8 wineries, with more on the rise.

Lake Country Wineries 

Gray Monk Estate

As one of the first wineries established in Lake Country, Gray Monk Estate produces world class wines such as Pinot Gris, Auxerrois and Gewürztraminer varieties. Situated on a beautiful estate where visitors can taste all of Gray Monk’s wines, and then head to the winery’s renowned Grapevine Restaurant, this makes for a beautiful day out. Arrowleaf Cellars 

Located just a few minutes up the road from Gray Monk, Arrowleaf Cellars is an exquisite winery that began in 1996. Established by a swiss-born family, the Zuppigers, Arrowleaf time and time again produces the most crisp and aromatic wines produced from grapes grown right on the property. During June to October, you can pair your wine with a delicious homemade pastry or with bread, cheese and charcuterie. Ex Nihilo 

 First planted in 2004, Ex Nihilo was built on handshakes and trust. Known for its artistic sensibility, “Ex Nihilo” means “out of nothing”. Since its launch, this mediterranean-styled winery, has become a popular spot for those wanting to look at fine-art while sipping some delicious Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and other fine selections. 

Blind Tiger Vineyards 

In the days of Al Capone and the American Prohibition (1920 – 1933), establishments to buy illegal alcohol and places to party began to emerge. Most commonly, these places were known as “Speakeasies”, but other names emerged as well – including “Blind Tiger”. Named after this era, Blind Tiger opened its doors in 2015 during the growing wine and tourism season. Experience the winery’s prohibition roots in its small tasting room, and grab a bottle of your favorite wine to enjoy with some delicious wood-burning pizza!
